Composing an SMS

Guidance and tips for writing the best SMS copy when sending your campaign.

When receiving a campaign, the SMS is the first thing your customer will see and engage with and will set the tone for your campaign. Therefore, it’s important to make the most of your SMS copy to improve the chances of click-through to your landing page.

When composing your SMS there are some key points to be aware of:

  1. As indicated in the interface, you may use up to 306 characters in your SMS. However, any character length above 160 will use 2 credits. To use 1 credit only, you must limit your SMS to 160 characters.

Please note: Character count is calculated per SMS and is variable depending on your copy and the character count for personalization fields and emojis used.

For example, if you use ##{{first_name}} personalization and a long customer name results in the 160-character limit being exceeded; you will be charged 2 credits for that SMS. In the case that a specific customer field exceeds the character limit of 306, that specific customer will not receive your SMS and you will not be charged a credit for that customer.

Your campaign link is mandatory in landing page campaigns, and you cannot review or send your SMS without it. The link is 25 characters in length.

  2. SMS uses GSM-encoded characters, and due to this, our platform will automatically convert any non-GSM-encoded characters within your SMS copy. This may result in some of your special characters appearing differently.

  3. We do this to ensure your characters do not take up more of your available characters than necessary.

  4. This may also result in any hyperlinks being removed from your text.

  5. Please view this table for a list of characters that are replaced by our platform.

  6. The inclusion of “STOP to opt out” copy is enabled by default and is suggested by regulations. If the customer replies with STOP, STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, or QUIT, we will automatically unsubscribe the contact and remove them from any lists. You will not be able to send campaigns to this contact, unless they explicitly re-subscribe themselves, e.g. via a text to join growth campaign.

Please note: STOP to opt out functionality will always be active, even if the copy is not included in your SMS.

Adding personalization

Personalizing your copy and tailoring your SMS to each contact will show your customer that the campaign was designed for them and isn’t spam. This helps build trust and encourages higher click-through to your landing page. At minimum, we suggest including your customer’s first name to highlight that the campaign is unique to them and likely hol valuable content.
